Most of my work from the last few years is landscape painting of one kind or another. I often work from observation, but I also work from the residue of observation - a mixture of memory and imagination. Those paintings start with marks, but my impulse from there is to make a place, even if it is not clear where that place is.
I started my studio art studies at the Corcoran in Washington, DC in 1998, and continued them at Washington Studio School from 2005 on. In 2016, I retired after many years of working at Washington nonprofits and started spending more time in the studio. I completed the WSS master certificate program in 2023.
I have shown work in many group exhibitions, especially at WSS and at the Allegany Arts Council in Cumberland, MD. I had a solo graduation show at WSS in May 2023 - it is archived here on their website. I also had a show in April 2024 at the Tappahannock Art Gallery in Tidewater Virginia. Several of the paintings and prints displayed on this site were in that show.
This is not a shopping cart site, but I do have paintings and prints available for purchase. If you're interested, please email me at lee@leebutler.art.
